Boston Globe (first) is first published.

Published by Eben Jordan and five others, it is located initially at 238 – 242 Washington Street. Maturin Ballou is the first editor. Charles Taylor becomes publisher in August 1873, and then owner. A daily, it costs four cents. The first Sunday edition is published on October 14, 1877, the first evening edition on March 7, 1878, and the last on February 4, 1979. Early on, it becomes known for trying to print the name or picture of every resident in Greater Boston at least once during the year. It expands into a new building at 45 Devonshire Street in 1887, moves next door on Washington Street (second) in 1902,* to a new plant (third) on Morrissey Boulevard in in 1958,* and to Exchange Place (fourth) in 2017.* The paper is purchased by Affiliated Publications in 1973, by the New York Times in 1993, and by John and Linda Pizzuiti Henry on October 24, 2013.
